Modern AI tools can remove blemishes, smooth skin, brighten eyes — and in doing so, sometimes erase decades of identity. A wrinkle removed here, a freckle blurred there — and suddenly, the image becomes something else entirely. A version of the past that never really existed.

This might be acceptable for fashion. But not for memory.

When you’re restoring a photo of your grandmother, or a parent long passed, or a moment that once meant everything — the goal is not to beautify. It’s to honour.

A Restoration Ethic

We’ve developed a quiet philosophy at Memori Works: restore with restraint.

We brighten what time has dulled. We heal what has been scratched or broken. But we never remove what makes the image human.

If someone had laugh lines, they stay. If a photo was taken in poor lighting but captured real feeling, we preserve that atmosphere. We want the photo to feel more itself — not less.

This is especially important when working with families of those living with dementia. The photos we restore are often one of the last clear records of a life. To falsify that record would be a kind of loss in itself.
